What is Velvet made of?

Soft, warm and shiny, velvet is often used in the winter collections of many well-known brands. Currently very fashionable, it is warm, soft and shiny, and gives every piece a touch of elegance.

But what material is this beautiful fabric made of ?

Velvet is a fabric with a dense, smooth and shiny pile . It can be made of cotton, silk, wool or synthetic materials.

Cotton velvet, also called velvet , has insulating properties that make it warm and comfortable. Born in England, it is quite versatile and lends itself to the production of different types of garments, accessories and comfortable and playful shoes such as friulane and slippers.

Wool velvet has a soft and compact pile: its strength makes it especially suitable for making curtains and furnishing textile coverings. It was once used for the coverings of luxury trains. It can also be chosen to make soft and voluminous outerwear.

Our favorite is silk velvet: bright, smooth and shiny, you can find it in our Rugiada . Produced since the 1400s in Venice - a city whose elegance it undeniably retains - it then spread to Genoa, where it was made in a particularly fine variety. It remains a valuable fabric today, chosen for its silky hand and the way it reflects light, giving life to intense shadows and soft glows.

Viscose velvet is a soft pile fabric that gives garments a special softness. Often used also for hats and outerwear.

Velvet can also be worked to create more or less complex patterns: these will be raised in the worked velvet, "sunken" in the devoré workmanship, which you can find in our Amore band.

Finally, chenille - which you will soon find in our "Luce" turbans - is a velvety fabric obtained through various possible processes, sometimes with the combination of two different materials, such as cotton and silk, or synthetic fibers. Born in the 30s, it became particularly popular in the 70s, and today it exists in numerous variants, such as the elastic ones that we have chosen for our creations.
